Out of sight out of mind…

January 7, 2009

The cycle is complete – I threw the Vista laptop in the trash. Now, this may seem wasteful but the repair to the motherboard was going to be a nebulous “at least $200″ from a local geek shop and I just bought the ASUStek eee (which is great, by the way, except for the right side shift key – too small but I’m adjusting) for  a little bit more and I still have the Sony Vaio. Instead I bought a 120g drive for the Sony and set it up without all the crap Sony had on it when I bought it. Since it is the 15.4″ size it functions as the desktop but I sync it with the eee. I will say it one more time, just for fun, Vista sucks – completely.

I left Norman, OK last Sunday and the temp was 22 degrees. Just North of Lafayette the rain slowed me down to 40 mph and it was a bit surreal to see all of the treefrogs and bullfrogs leaping across the road in the path of my light beams and tires. It was 73 degrees and I was just a few hours removed (well, 9 or so hours) from longjohns and gloves. Now I was watching frogs.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to seeing alligators. The shape seems to be burned into the part of my brain stem which says “That’s not good. You should think of running, now!” I saw another one today, about four feet long, sunning on the side of the bar ditch on 3213 as I drove to the Gramercy Bridge. I do not mind warm winter weather but my preference would be to see to an ocean while wearing shirtsleeves in January.

rather than creating a new post I added info on the 1997 GMC Jimmy heater core replacement to the post link above.

Happy New Year.

I’m eating lunch at Panera and the Heisman Trophy winner just carried his own drink and sandwich to his table. Everyone has to eat.

The lack of posts is partially due to the fried laptop syndrome. That has been treated by buying an ASUS eee netbook (which is more powerful than my Sony Vaio and has NO VISTA.  Yahoo! [this is the exclamation not the trademarked word]) about a month ago.

The company laid off most of the remaining employees not tied to a project the week around Xmas. Only an idiot wouldn’t have seen it coming and I was ready to be included in the batch. I even had plans B and C well in the works. I’m not complaining that I still have a job. There are the realities of owning a home and rental property in another state. I don’t sleep in my own bed and cannot manage it properly from 700 miles away. The result is real income loss and QOL loss. I spent half of my vacation chasing out the ghost of the chain-smoking alcoholic tenant I asked to move on Dec 15.

There is nothing like cleaning up stale beer, cigarette ashes and butts, dirty laundry and cat piss. Onward.
